Including the prestigious Project of the Year

The Scott Brownrigg-designed St George’s Activity Centre in Weybridge, UK has been shortlisted for two Education Estates awards. It joins the shortlists for the prestigious Project of the Year Schools category, and for the Inspiring Learning Spaces award.

The Education Estates awards celebrate excellence and achievement in education. This announcement follows the successful shortlisting of St Georges Activity centre for the RIBA Regional Awards South East.

The Activity Centre at St George’s is a 4,000 sq m, three-storey building that supports the School’s ambitious sporting vision. With a striking, wave-like roof fashioned from renewably sourced Glulam, the buildings flows in union with its Green Belt surroundings. A processional staircase, based on the staircase at Wells Cathedral, connects all different activities throughout the building.

It provides an inspirational environment for students and community participation and engagement, supporting a project vision that delivers ‘activity for all’.

The Inspiring Learning Spaces award category looks for innovation in the creation of learning spaces that promote different and new ways of learning and teaching.

One of the fundamental drivers for the building is inclusion; all the students get to be part of the sports, whether actively or as spectators. Whilst in the main sports hall, an innovative glass-sprung sports floor promotes a new way of teaching multiple sports in one building. The fully-programmable LED lighting provides line markings for all types of sports, and enhances the experience for visually-impaired students.

The successful projects were announced in a digital shortlist party on Tuesday 8 September. The full shortlist and on demand recording of the shortlist party can both be found here.

Winners will be announced at the Education Estates Digital Awards on Thursday 15 October 2020.
