The Brief

Similar to Stoneywood School, the council’s outline brief calls for a new state-of-the-art school, a two stream facility providing a modern, congenial, healthy, learning and working environment for the primary and pre-school community.

Concept

Our design is conceived around the strongest sustainable design and placemaking principles. Four teaching pavilions incorporating breakout activity spaces, are arranged along a widened linear circulation route with community, assembly and supported learning spaces adjacent to activate the route. The teaching pavilions are situated on the playground side of the site, linking classrooms to external spaces whilst the reception, and larger spaces such as the hall form a formal frontage to a proposed community square within the development masterplan.

Features

The building will benefit from cross laminated timber elements and the teaching pavilions will be surrounded by a learning landscape featuring paved and planted areas, sensory garden, outdoor learning and play facilities plus a 3G synthetic pitch. Level access to these spaces will be provided from all classrooms within the facility. The division of public and private or front and back in the scheme will allow for parts of the building to open up for community use, enhancing the community neighbourhood square proposed within the masterplan.
